This program is currently on hold while we re-evaluate. Stay tuned for a new and improved program shortly.
IBKC and Harbour Veterinary Clinic are proud to offer financial assistance to help low-income families access essential veterinary care. This program helps cover exams, vaccines, parasite control, medications, and urgent (non-emergency) medical issues so pets can stay healthy and remain in their homes.
Who Qualifies
You may be eligible if you currently receive:
- BC Income Assistance (Welfare)
- BC Persons With Disabilities (PWD)
- Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS)
Additional requirements:
- Maximum of two pets
- All pets must be spayed/neutered (If you need assistance with spay/neuter you can apply for our low income spay/neuter program)
- Must live on Vancouver Island or the Gulf Islands
- Proof of eligibility required yearly
- You must have owned/rescued/adopted this animal 1 year ago or more
- IBKC animals (ie, you adopted from IBKC) are excluded from this program
- As an organization that tried to help with the over population issue, we do not support breeding of animals. As a result, pure bred animals are exempt from the hearts at home program
How the Program Works
Once approved, you can book veterinary appointments for each enrolled pet.
The exam fee is $30 + tax (after subsidy).
The veterinarian may recommend vaccines, flea/worm treatment, medications, bloodwork, X-rays, or other basic diagnostics. (all additional treatments are with the consent/recommendation of the Harbour Vet Veterinarian). IBKC pays 60% and you pay 40%.
You may return for follow-up exams or ongoing care as often as your pet needs, until your pet’s annual funding limit is reached.
Annual Coverage
Each pet receives up to $750 per year toward eligible care.
Important Notes
- Two missed appointments without 24 hours’ notice will remove you from the program.
- This funding applies only at Harbour Veterinary Clinic.
- We are not an emergency hospital.
