Oops Litter

Mistakes happen! Cats get pregnant and now you have kittens and no idea what to do. We would like to help. We will get mama fixed and returned to you free of charge if you surrender the kittens to get proper vetting.

Giving away your kittens

We get it, everyone loves a kitten. And giving them away is usually cute and sometimes even easy. Then you look at local rescue groups and think that after the adoption fee your friend would be better off just getting your free kitten.

But are they? Let’s dive into the cost of getting a free fur friend:

  1. Surgery: Look around in greater Victoria… the cost can be as much as $1,000. The reality it’s more like $500-600 or even as low as $400 if you shop around.
  2. Vaccination: All kittens need the core FVRCP vaccine. Without this vaccine they are very vulnerable. A wellness exam and vaccine should run on average $100.
  3. Deworming/Fleas: Kittens need preventative care for deworming and fleas. This can be done at the wellness exam and usually runs around $25-40
  4. Microchips: If your kitten is lost, a microchip is needed for them to find their way back home. This runs approx $100

As you can see, the total cost is over the adoption fee and that’s if the kitten doesn’t get sick, food costs, and more.

So as much as you want to think giving away a kitten is a good idea it’s not. The new owner will either have to pay way more than if the kitten went through a rescue OR they will not get all the services done because of cost – especially spay or neuter. This will lead to more unwanted kittens and other issues like spraying or pyometra.

If you care about them, get them the care they need at no cost to you!

Why we want the kittens?

Sometimes people ask why a rescue will only help a mom in exchange for the kittens. Our entire reason for existing is to prevent unnecessary suffering through excess cats and kittens being born and abandoned. Experience has shown that a fair number of these free kittens don’t get spayed or neutered and instead just continue to breed. At IBKC we want to make sure that they are all spayed and neutered. Even the kids!

We usually have the mom fixed and returned as soon as possible. Mom’s should remain with their babies until they are weaned, but once that is complete we will fix and return mama at no charge.
